Christmas in London as an International Student

Christmas in London can be the most magical time of year, but for those of you spending it away from your friends and families, it can be tough to enjoy the festivities when you’re so far from home.

There are, however, plenty of festive distractions that offer a different experience to the one you might usually have, and getting involved in the upcoming events, meetups and Christmas cheer can really help to clear those winter blues.

Get lost in the Christmas markets

The lead-up to Christmas in London is wonderfully whimsical. The decorative lights start to go up, the weather gets cooler and there’s a cheer in the air. Spread across the city are pop-up Christmas markets where you can wander through the smells of bratwurst and mulled wine, pick up a handmade decoration or gift, and listen to carol singers – and they’re usually free entry.

The biggest of markets is of course Winter Wonderland, taking over part of Hyde Park in a seasonal burst of lights, fairground rides and Bavarian beer. You’ll need to get tickets in advance, but they do offer student discounts on ice skating, rides and attractions.

Join a singles party

With more and more single people living independently in London, the single among you will find you’re one of many at Christmas time. Luckily, thanks to the powers of the internet, events and groups have been created so you can spend Christmas time in the company of others socialising throughout the holidays.

This is also a great opportunity to share your holiday traditions with others. Meetup offers a platform to connect with other people in the city and is usually run by event organisers, so you’ll be sure to find something worthwhile to go to over the Christmas period.

Catch a West End show

Tickets can be expensive during the holiday period, but here’s a little trick for getting super cheap tickets: pick a midweek matinee performance.

Unlike the costly evening and weekend shows, tickets to Christmas performances across West End go for a steal if you’re willing to queue up early outside the theatre to catch a bargain. Sites like Love Theatre also offer student discounts up to 40% off on a number of shows and pantomimes across the Christmas period.

Go to church

Whether you’re Christian or not, many churches across London open their doors to anyone and everyone, especially around Christmas time. Some of the most breathtaking architecture can be seen in some of the cathedrals across the city and many have carol services that would move you to tears.

You don’t need to be religious to enjoy these events, and for many they’re wonderful places for a place of calm and reflection, whilst listening to the incredible voices of the choir. Our favourite is the St Paul’s Cathedral Christmas concert they hold every year. Tickets are available in advance booking with a student discount.

Volunteer your time

Across the city, there are many different organisations and charities that struggle over the Christmas period and could really use an extra pair of hands to help out. Crisis at Christmas offers a volunteer program at homeless shelters across the city over the two weeks of Christmas.

There are plenty of roles available from general helper to more trained services such as chefs, doctors, drivers or even hairdressers. It’s a really rewarding but joyful experience, where you’ll meet like-minded volunteers and guests that are there to spend the joys of Christmas together.

While it won’t replace spending the holidays with family and friends, London offers you a once-in-a-lifetime experience to spend your Christmas in one of the most magical cities in the world. Our advice is to really throw yourself into events, meetups and unforgettable festivities across the city – it’ll have you cheery all through to January.
