Our roundup of free events and classes in London

It’s no secret that worthwhile courses, workshops and memberships in London can be expensive if you’re a student. Let’s face it, student loans barely cover living expenses, let alone a yearly membership to a gym.

So we’ve done a little digging and found some classes that are completely free. Read on for a list of the best classes and events across the city that you and your friends can join.

Stay fit

Location: Central London

Their leisurewear might cost a pretty penny, but Sweaty Betty has a reputation for some of the best HIIT, yoga and barre classes across their London flagship stores. The best news? They’re absolutely free.

Classes run on various days of the week, so if one clashes with a lecture, there’s sure to be another you can join another day. You’ll need to book online to secure yourself a spot. Our tip – book midweek, as it tends to be less busy and is an ideal time for students.

Practice mindfulness

Location: South London

Things can definitely get overwhelming and from time to time we all need to take a break. Mindfulness is getting more popular, and for good reason. As the world speeds up with technology, social media and the daily grind weighing heavy on our mental health, it’s important we take care of not just our bodies, but our minds too.

Thankfully, Sivananda Yoga Centre offers free group drop-in meditation sessions. There’s no need for any previous experience, and beginners are welcome and encouraged.

Walking tours

Location: Various areas across London

Ok, this isn’t exactly a course – but if you go on regular tours, you might learn a thing or two. Plus, it’s free exercise! Free Tours By Foot offer extensive walking tours across London, with knowledgeable guides that tell you stories from throughout history, some fact and some fable.

From Jack the Ripper to Harry Potter and the Royal Westminster, there really is something for everyone. Book your tours in advance – they’re popular.

Eat for free

Location: Various areas across East London

What’s better than food? Free food of course! The only drawback is that you actually have to cook it yourself first. But don’t panic, you’ll have a fully trained chef taking you through it step by step.

Greenwich and Hackney councils both run community cookery workshops designed to help you learn to cook and make healthier choices that won’t break the bank. Book online or call to secure your place.

Whatever you’re into, it’s there

Location: Various areas in London

The wonderful world of the internet has meant that whatever we’re into, we can fit in somewhere with like-minded people that share the same interests. Nowhere is better for this than EventBrite, particularly its free event section. Check it out to find dance classes, live music, book clubs or live-action roleplay: there’s something for everyone.

Just remember to click the dropdown price menu and select ‘free’. Try something new, you might find a new interest you never knew existed!
