What to Wear in London During the Winter
What to Wear in London During the Winter
If you’re an international student who is coming to live in London, you will no doubt have heard the rumours of the changeable weather we have here. While it’s not quite as cold as other parts of the world during winter, it can still get pretty chilly! And, of course, there will definitely be rain.
With that in mind, we’ve put together a guide on what to wear in London in the winter months so that you’re not caught out.
A waterproof coat
Although it’s not always considered to be the most fashionable item, a waterproof or water-resistant coat will be an essential part of your wardrobe during London winters. Rather than having to lug an umbrella wherever you go, a good-quality waterproof ensures that you will be protected against the elements if there’s a sudden downpour!
A warm smart coat
On those wonderful days where it isn’t raining, or when you want to look slightly more dressy, a warm coat is a fantastic thing to have in your winter wardrobe. The style you opt for will depend on personal preference, and there are options ranging from faux fur to wool, but the most important thing is that it’s warm enough to keep you cosy on clear and cold winter days.
Knitted jumpers
A staple of your London wardrobe during the winter months will be your knitted jumpers. You’ll probably live in these from October to March, so make sure to invest in some good-quality knitwear that can be mixed and matched with all the other clothes in your wardrobe.
A thick pair of jeans
Jeans are also an essential player when it comes to what to wear in London during the winter. They’ll keep your legs warm and covered, they are versatile to wear during the day or night and they can be easily paired with a warm pair of boots. London is a fairly casual city and you’ll see most people wearing jeans, so it’s a good idea to get a couple of winter-proof pairs in your wardrobe.
A sturdy pair of boots
Trainers are incredibly comfortable but they don’t always keep your feet warm on those really cold winter days. Therefore, it’s worth investing in a sturdy pair of winter boots – ones with a good grip on the bottom and that are large enough to accommodate thick pairs of socks underneath. You might want a more casual pair for the day time and a slightly nicer pair for the evenings.
Hats, scarves and gloves
Last but not least, you will definitely be needing some warm winter accessories if you’re spending winter in London. A beanie or bobble hat, a thick scarf and a fleece pair of gloves will all make sure that you’re snuggled up warm in the winter, preventing you from shivering if you’re spending time outside. A lot of gloves are now touch-screen friendly so you don’t have to have freezing cold hands while you reply to messages or scroll through Instagram.
Thanks for reading this guide on what to wear in London during the winter months! With London winters, we always recommend prioritising comfort and practicality over style (although of course you can still look great in the cold).
