The Ultimate Student Guide To UK Lockdown 2.0

We’re sure you’re all aware that the UK is about to enter its second nationwide lockdown due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Just like before, the advice will be to stay home as much as possible - but, importantly, schools and universities are remaining open this time around!

For the next 4 weeks, our lives will look a little different to normal. But that doesn’t mean that your life has to be put on hold. We’re keeping positive and seeing the next 4 weeks as an opportunity: the chance to learn new skills, try out new hobbies, and generally approach life with a positive attitude, despite the situation.

We’ve put together our guide for London students navigating the second national lockdown - from advice for your studies to how to keep yourself happy and positive during this time, read on for our top tips!

STUDYING DURING LOCKDOWN

With schools, colleges and universities remaining open during this second national lockdown, your studies should be minimally affected. However, there are clear guidelines both you and your university should abide by.

what you should do:

What your university should do:

  • If you are feeling unwell, stay at home and inform your tutor as soon as possible

  • Wear a face covering on campus whenever you’re inside a building, unless you're exempt. If you are exempt, let your admin office know about your situation and you’ll be given a navy blue lanyard to wear so that others know you are exempt

  • Wash and/or sanitise your hands regularly

  • Stay alert and maintain social distancing at all times

  • Use disinfectant spray provided to wipe down any surfaces you use

  • Make sure you’re aware of the latest guidelines issued by your university

  • Make it possible (and easy) for you to study online when not on campus

  • Circulate fresh air wherever possible throughout inside study areas

  • Provide ample hand sanitisation stations across campus

  • Install clear signage and one-way systems to assist in social distancing

  • Follow an enhanced cleaning process across campus

  • Provide regular and clear updates on safety measures and guidelines to keep you safe

WORKING DURING LOCKDOWN

For many of you, part time jobs are vital to your financial security while you study. However, with non-essential businesses being forced to close during the second lockdown, you might be concerned about the security of your employment.

The government has extended the furlough job support scheme for the month of November. If your employer puts you on furlough, you will receive 80% of your usual salary funded by the government - at no cost to your employer. You can find out more about the scheme here.

LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF DURING LOCKDOWN

The uncertainty of entering another national lockdown can take its toll on our mental health. The future is unpredictable and with restrictions on our social lives and communities, lockdowns can be harmful to our psychological wellbeing. But, there are plenty of things you can do to help keep yourself positive and upbeat.

At a very basic level, you should be prioritising the following:

  • Keeping in touch with friends and family as much as possible, via Zoom or FaceTime or a good old fashioned phone call

  • Getting outside for some fresh air regularly - although the London weather may not be the best, it’s so important to take time for a walk around the block to get fresh air and some perspective. Don’t stay cooped up indoors all day!

  • Keep yourself hydrated, well-fed and try to get some physical exercise into your days

And, if you’re feeling like you need a little bit extra, try one of our favourite self-care ideas!
